Esdras Andrade, an independent animal protector and rescuer from São José dos Campos in Brazil, was about to leave town for a vacation when he received a video of a family of dogs by the side of a busy road. Apparently, someone dumped the poor animals and left them to die. There was no doubt it was the perfect place to abandon unwanted animals but Esdras refused to let them suffer.
Instead of heading to the beach, where he meant to relax, Esdras grabbed his keys and drove straight to where the dogs were. He saw the momma dog in the middle of the road, trying to stop traffic. She begged people for help but none of the motorists who passed by cared enough to stop. They just went right on their way and ignored the poor dog.
Despite the momma dog’s apparent fear of the approaching vehicles, she stood by and continued to seek help. She didn’t mind the danger she was in for as long as someone decides to offer a hand. But unfortunately, she didn’t get the help she needed.
Esdras approached the puppies that lay on the grass. He was a step away from them when the momma dog saw him and she raced to stop him from getting too close. She didn’t understand he was there to help and warned him to back off.
The rescuer needed to gain the momma dog’s trust quickly. With just one look, he knew that her puppies needed medical attention. He also believed something was probably wrong with her so it was urgent to bring them to the vet.
It took hours before Esdras managed to get the momma dog and the puppies into safety. But once he did, he rushed them to the vet. He knew it was important that the newborn puppies be seen by a specialist at the earliest possible time so he wasted no second.
The entire family was swarmed with thousands of fleas. One puppy, however, was badly infested compared to his siblings. He needed extra care, but they all got the treatment they needed.
The momma dog and her six puppies are now under the care of their rescuer. They will be available for adoption soon, but for now, they need a foster home, where they can stay together until they are all ready to start fresh.
